Spain Pavilion. International Exhibition Floriade 2012

Video: floriade.nl / Original Music: Javier Pedreira

The international horticulture exposition Floriade has taken place in the Netherlands every ten years since the sixties. In 2012, Floriade is celebrating its sixth year from April 5 to October 7 in the impressive natural region of Venlo in the Dutch province of Limburg.

Spain’s participation in Floriade 2012 is marked by the diversity of environments and production methods which exist in its national territory. Spain is the country with the greatest ecological biodiversity in the entire European continent. This huge productive diversity is its natural heritage and this quality is reflected in the slogan “naturally diverse”.

The Spanish pavilion emerges from these conceptual approaches and the building confers continuity to the exhibition space through a formal gesture that unifies the whole of the available surface. The building literally rises out of the land and is slightly raised to house the interior spaces of the exhibition.

From a formal perspective, the reference to something as natural as topography and the growth of plants becomes an argument for unification based on the idea of continuity in the exterior meeting places which are connected to the interior of the exhibition. The use of a material as natural as wood reinforces this concept; the building’s structure and roof are made entirely of wood, which unifies the whole space into one single piece. The building is further unified by the corporate logo which is displayed across its outside walls.
